Landscape Photography

Prior to becoming a professional photographer, I qualified and practiced as a chartered landscape architect for many years. In addition to running community events, designing parks and open spaces, I’d photograph all stages of a project for inclusion in project profiles, marketing materials and websites.

Having been a designer, I understand how best to showcase spaces through the eye of a designer. I’ll capture intricate details, key vistas and viewpoints, planting combinations, historical references and how designed spaces sit within their surroundings.

I also strive to capture key features within your design in their best light. I regularly suggest photographing landscapes both at dawn and dusk to show off lighting schemes, planting and also allow the scheme to be photographed with and without people using the space.

A collection of my private work is available to purchase as premium mounted and framed prints. Please visit Paul Upward Fine Arts Gallery to see my latest work.

I work with a wide range of clients including:

  • Landscape architects
  • Environmental charities and agencies
  • Local authorities
  • Housing associations
  • Urban designers
  • Landscape contractors
  • Garden designers

I can also be regularly found photographing awards ceremonies and CPD seminars for the Landscape Institute. I also photograph show gardens at both Chelsea and Hampton Court for landscape architects and garden designers.

If you’d like me to photograph your completed project, its construction, community consultations, or even headshots of you and your team, please get in touch.

Testimonials

We really enjoy working with Paul as he understands how to bring landscapes to life through his photographs, ensuring people are at the centre of the images, which is key to our ethos of people focussed landscape design.

Tim SpainDirector, Turkington Martin

‘Paul provides Waterscapes with a great service, an inciteful mind with his landscape architecture background, Paul is able to encapsulate exactly what we need every time.  His technical skills and a keen eye for capturing the best in any landscape.’

Paul JefferyManaging Director, Waterscapes

Logic Manufactured Bespoke has had the pleasure of working with Paul on several prestigious landscape developments, such as the Old War Office in London.
His stunning photographs have helped bring these designs to life and showcase the projects in the best possible light. Paul’s creative eye and technical skills produce images that highlights the true essence of every project, and his expertise in this area of photography really shows in the finished results. We’re grateful for his help and would recommend Paul as a talented photographer who delivers incredible results.

Stephen AllenR&D Engineer, Logic Manufactured Bespoke

“Paul has been a pleasure to work with and we’re delighted with the photographs he has taken of our gardens. Paul is excellent at really capturing a space – whether it’s big or small – the photographs are creative, the lighting is spot on and the composition is always carefully considered.”

Rosa HintonMarketing Manager, Bowles & Wyre

“Since winning our first RHS Gold Medal and People’s Choice Award in 2007 we have always used Paul Upward as our go to photographer.

In 2017 we returned to RHS Hampton and won an RHS Gold Medal, RHS People’s Choice Award and the highly converted RHS Best in Show. Paul formed a key part of our show garden team and caught the energy and excitement of our Wild Garden throughout the media and press day at the show. Paul has a great way with people and an ability to catch very natural moments in time.”

Adam White Director, Davies White Landscape Architects

“In 2019, we commissioned Paul to create a photography portfolio of our various assets in Thamesmead. This area has an abundance of green spaces, kilometres of canals and Thames Paths, great architecture and a rich history. This was not a small task, yet Paul delivered a stunning set of photos of known and more unknown areas of Thamesmead, which we use regularly internally, externally, as well as in exhibitions.
Paul is really easy to work with, knows how to capture a brief and goes above and beyond to deliver an outstanding final product.

Thank you Paul for all your hard work!”
